Aiming High!

Olympics in full swing and Great Britain has gone sporting mad.  Sessions at the Manchester velodrome are being booked up weeks in advance and even Gordon, our GM,  has been seen out 'training' on his bike!

Fitting then, that our customers are doing their bit to encourage the next generation of athletes here in Glencoe.

The children at Glencoe Primary School are trying to raise funds to build a climbing wall at the school and Clachaig have pledged to raise £1000 towards this. We're well on the way, having already raised £723.

Many thanks and keep on buying those raffle tickets!

Better late than never - Bruce

Anyone discovering our Boots bar for the first time could have been forgiven for thinking they had taken a wrong turn at Ayers rock.

Australian traditional folk band Wongawilli graced the stage on Monday 7th July as they passed through Glencoe continuing their world domination tour. They s oon had the whole bar involved playing the Lagerphone  - A sophisticated instrument made from a broom handle covered with beer bottle tops - this provided great amusement when the staff tried to join in.

David De Santi & his merry band entertained the revellers with a huge selection of Aussie outback music as well as some classics from closer to these shores.

Behind the bar we had ales re-branded with Australian names including “Koala Beer”, “Austr-ALE-Ya”,  “Aborigi-ALE” & a mystery ale called “can you guess what it is yet?” and with Kangaroo burgers hopping off the char grill all night it made for a classic night of fun.

Hi! Wi-Fi – Surfing in the Glen?

They say that while the cat’s away the mice will play, well here at Clachaig the mice are busy following up on our customer feedback by installing Wireless Broadband….”At long last” I hear you say.

Wi-Fi broadband access is now available in our residents lounge, Boots bar, Snug & Lounge bar. Our visitors can now keep in touch with the outside world…although not sure why they’d want to!

Our guests are happy by the looks of things and hopefully the “cat” will be too when he gets back from holiday.

G'Day Mate!

Strewth Bruce, chuck another shrimp on the barbie!

As you’ll no doubt be aware, there’s plenty of live music dates here at Clachaig Inn. However, every now and then, one comes along that’s a little special and therefore worthy of a special mention.

Monday 7th July is one such date as we present Wongawilli, coming all the way to Glencoe from the Australian outback. We’ve no idea how this one’s going to go down but its got all the hallmarks of a classic night out at Clachaig. And to give it our best shot, everyone will be changing their names to Bruce (or Sheila) for the night, we’ll be chucking a few shrimps on the barbie, mate (or at least a ‘roo burger on the char-grill anyway) and coming out with irreverent statements like ‘can you tell what it is yet?”

So, put on your Rolf Harris beards and your shorts and get practising your stereo-typical Aussie accents and we’ll see you on the 7th, mate.

Glencoe WebCam

Come the winter season, how many times do we get asked, "What are the roads like?" To which the usual answer, depending on how sarcastic we're feeling and how long the day has been so far is, "long and black with a white line down the middle".

But no more! Just check out the Traffic Scotland web cams at Altnafeadh - follow this link and look for the cameras in the 'North and Highlands' menu. There's one looking east, and one west.

Just another sunny weekend in Lochaber

Despite the usual (wrong) forecast Saturday dawned anther blue-sky day and so with buckets and spades at the ready we set off for a day on the beach. Its a real pleasure visiting the silver sands at Traigh and Camusdarroch, but on a warm summers' day its the best place on the planet!

View from Traigh Beach

Despite the fantastic weather , the beaches were exceptionally quiet. A light breeze provided ideal conditions for getting to grips with the new 2.5m flexifoil kite, while sandcastles were the order of the day further up the beach. Obligatory fish 'n' chips followed before in Mallaig!

The weather continued clear and sunny, making the final of the Mountain Bike Downhill in the Fort William round of the World Cup.

Nevis Range car park never looked like this!

The atmosphere was fantastic. The sun was hot. The beer was served cold! Its not hard to see why this event is voted as best on the circuit each year.

And, biker or not, you can't help but think that this makes for a great spectator day out. Big jumps into the finish arena, along with a huge screen bringing live action from further up the hill make it easy to soak up the excitement of the event.

Mayfest postscript

If you doubted that summer had arrived then just ask anyone who visited Clachaig during our recent Mayfest - Friday 23rd to Saturday 31st - a week of sweltering sunshine, music, beer and …er… midges! With over 30 cask-conditioned ales on offer from our favourite independent Scottish brewers it was always going to be a winner.

Beer of the festival went to Caledonian Brewery's excellent passion fruit concoction “Forbidden fruit”. Lovely crisp, fruity ale with a lingering exotic aftertaste well suited to the tropical weather we experienced.

The first weekend saw debut gigs from White Rose, who received a great reception on Friday night with their rousing folk ballads and - after a late cancellation - Edinburgh trio the Whistleblowers got everyone’s toes tapping for another memorable night.

Forbidden Fruit - Caledonian Brewery

Throughout the week we had more quality entertainment than you can shake a stick at. Jimmy the Bushes Big Frizzy Quiz, quality tunes from Rusty Nail, Bonny and Jim and an ale tasting masterclass hosted by Cairngorm Brewery that was enjoyed by all…..judging by the way they all tottered out of the snug when it was over.

Into the final weekend then and the weather, unlike last year, was truly glorious! The boots bar was buzzing on the Friday evening and when Shenanigan took to the stage they nearly took the roof off! The last night of fun saw crowd pleasers Flint play out the festival with a bang.

Many thanks to all who made it such a success and gold stars to all our hardworking staff who battled through the heat, the mayhem & the midges…See you next year!
