Round Loch Leven
A leisurely 20 mile road ride with great scenery and Coffee Shops. If you can get round in under the hour then you may even consider coming back and having a go at the local club time trial series!
Usually started from Glencoe but equally you could start in North Ballachulish, Kinlochleven or anywhere on this citrcular route. A good one to consider if you’re consider hiring bikes.
For the most part the road is relatively quiet, and with the recently built cycle track it is now possible to avoid the busy A82 between North Ballachulish and Glencoe village altogether.
There are a few hills, and none cyclists will probably huff and puff a little, though there’s nothing too steep or too long, and the downhill on the other side is well worth the effort!
On the north shore, find time to stop and visit the loch side, and perhaps call in at the Loch Leven Seafood Cafe for a tasty snack fresh from the loch, perhaps washed down with a glass of the good stuff. In Kinlochleven, there’s a choice of coffee stops, and you could even go multi-sport and pop in a for a climb at the Ice Factor. well worth popping in to look at the rock and ice walls if nothing else.
At the top of the rise to the east of North Ballachulish look out for the Callart Mausoleum up in the trees above the road. Built some time in the latter part of the 19th century, this is the resting place of the Cameron-Lucy family of Callart and Fassifern.
Bishop’s Bay is also worth taking some time to explore. On a sunny day, it’s easy to see why the views of the boats and Beinn a’ Bheithir feature on so many postcards and calendars.
